Federal Bureau of Prisons Release Search

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities nationwide, use the federal custody record rather than the Beltrami County jail roster. The federal locator can identify a sentenced federal prisoner, show a release date, and state whether the person remains at a BOP location. A federal prison release does not prove that every form of custody or supervision ended. Beltrami County records still matter when the person began in local custody, while federal court and BOP sources control the later federal phase. Exact identity fields and the wording of the federal result should be saved.

Federal Bureau of Prisons Releases

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates the nationwide federal prison system for sentenced federal prisoners. It is not the Beltrami County Adult Corrections Center, a Minnesota DOC prison system, or a public locator for every person held on a federal matter. Federal pretrial and transport detention arranged by the U.S. Marshals Service can occur outside BOP locator scope. A person can leave a BOP facility for the community, a residential placement, another authority’s custody, or another lawful destination. The public result answers only the BOP portion of that path.

A past federal Release Date shown with “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” and no institution means the person is no longer in BOP custody according to the agency’s record. It does not establish that federal supervision ended. It also does not rule out state, county, immigration, or another sovereign’s custody. The status, release date, location wording, and identifying number should be read as a set instead of treating the date alone as a full discharge record.

Scope matters: A BOP release result confirms the end of BOP custody, not release from every agency or legal obligation.

Confirm Federal Prison Release Records

The BOP Inmate Locator provides the first official public check. An identification-number search is the narrowest route when the exact number is known. Name search is useful when no number is available, but it requires closer identity comparison. Save the query date because current custody and future dates can change.

  1. Choose an identifier search when a BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number is known. Enter the number in the matching field.
  2. Otherwise search by first, middle, and last name. Use age, race, and sex filters only to distinguish likely matches.
  3. Compare the returned name, register number, age, race, and sex. Do not rely on a common name alone.
  4. Read the Release Date and Location together. Note whether the location is an institution, “Released,” or “Not in BOP Custody.”
  5. Check the federal court record or another custody source when the result does not explain what happened after BOP custody.

The official locator form shows the available search routes. Open the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator source before entering the person’s information.

The numbered and name-search paths help avoid confusing a sentenced BOP prisoner with a person held only for federal court or transport.

Federal Prison Release Search Fields

BOP offers two search modes. The identifier route searches an agency number tied to the federal record. The name route uses identity details and optional filters. A register number is the clearest BOP-specific anchor, but DCDC, FBI, and INS numbers can also locate a record when entered in the right field. Name results require comparison because spelling, middle names, and similar identities can affect the match.

DCDC numberDistrict of Columbia corrections identifierUse only in its named field

NameFirst, middle, and last name searchCompare register number and descriptors
Age, race, and sexOptional name-search filtersUse to narrow, not as sole identity proof

The returned record includes name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. Those fields describe BOP’s record. They do not provide the county booking number, Beltrami release authority, federal supervision terms, or a full history of every transfer.

Note: Preserve the federal register number because it is a stronger bridge between the locator result and later BOP records requests.

Federal Bureau Release Date Meanings

The Release Date field changes meaning with its timing and the Location field. A past date paired with a released status is evidence that BOP custody ended as recorded. A future date is a projection. It may be changed by sentence computation or later events. “Unknown” means BOP cannot state the release date from the current record, not that release already occurred.

Future Release DateProjected federal prison releaseRecheck for recalculation and current location
UnknownBOP cannot yet state the dateUse the court record and later locator checks

“Release” and “discharge” should not be merged. A prison release ends physical BOP custody. Federal supervision can continue in the community under the authority shown in the court record. Final sentence completion is a separate question. Another detainer may also route the person to a different agency on the BOP release date.

Federal Release Record Update Timing

BOP explains that locator data are refreshed from a daily extract. A newly recorded event may therefore not appear at the exact moment custody changes. Save the date and time of each query and confirm a high-stakes timing question with the responsible federal source. A one-day update cycle also means two searches made close together can show different results without either screen serving as a permanent certificate.

Future dates can change. BOP notes that First Step Act credits or another sentence recalculation can affect a projected date. Court amendments and administrative computation can also alter the displayed outcome. A future date should never be restated as a guaranteed walk-out time. The current locator, sentence record, and any later federal status should be checked together.

The BOP records guide explains these limits. Review the official federal locator records explanation for the current definitions.

Federal Bureau of Prisons release record meanings for Beltrami County searches

The guide separates a completed BOP release from projected, unknown, and other-custody questions that the locator cannot resolve.

Note: Recheck a future federal release date because the public locator reflects the agency’s current computation rather than a fixed promise.

Beltrami County Federal Custody Path

A person can appear in the Beltrami County locator with a U.S. Marshal hold without being a sentenced BOP prisoner. The U.S. Marshals Service arranges federal pretrial detention and transport, sometimes through local or contract beds. It has no nationwide historical public release locator comparable to BOP. For that phase, the federal docket’s detention or release order is the main legal record.

If the federal court later imposes a prison sentence and the person enters BOP custody, the BOP Locator becomes useful. The Beltrami County Public Safety hub leads to the current local inmate source, while the Sheriff’s Records Office can provide public and separable county admission and release fields. Those county records establish when Beltrami custody ended. They do not replace the federal prison record.

A strong chain uses the Beltrami release or transfer field, the federal court action, and the BOP result when sentenced federal custody followed. The U.S. Marshals Beltrami holds record path applies when the person remained in pretrial or transport custody and never entered a BOP sentence.

Federal Bureau Release Records Route

BOP’s public locator and records explanation are the official online routes supplied by the research. The locator answers the current public search. The records guide defines what the date and location mean and notes data limits. A federal court docket supplies the detention, sentencing, and supervision orders that the locator does not display.

Use the register number, full name, and federal court case information when seeking a more exact record. Do not send a BOP release question to the Beltrami jail when the county transfer has already been established. Conversely, BOP cannot certify the exact time Beltrami County ended its local custody.

After Federal Bureau Prison Release

A BOP release can be followed by federal supervision. The sentencing court record identifies that legal term, while the public BOP result focuses on prison custody. Another agency can also assume custody because of a detainer or separate legal authority. A detainer is a notice that another agency seeks custody or notification before release. It is not itself proof that the transfer occurred.

State and county systems remain separate. Minnesota DOC handles state prison custody and supervised release. Beltrami County handles its local jail record. ICE uses the Online Detainee Locator System for its own custody, and that system has different identity fields and timing limits. A BOP “Not in BOP Custody” result cannot be translated into a Minnesota DOC, Beltrami County, or ICE status.

For a person whose route began in Beltrami County, the full Beltrami County released inmate search compares the county, court, state, federal, and immigration records. Keep each agency’s status in its own column, record the query time, and resolve conflicts with the office that created the record.

Note: Pair the BOP release result with the federal court record or receiving agency before describing where the person went next.
